Welcome to the Iowa Senior Olympics
DATE CHANGE FOR 2010 IOWA SENIOR OLYMPIC GAMES:
This Summer's Iowa Senior Olympic Games will be held Th - Sun, June 17 - 20. The Hy Vee Triathlon is being held the previous weekend and there were conflicts with some of the facilities. Going to separate weekends will help make both outstanding events a big success. Softball and Cycling are the two exceptions. The softball tournament will be held Fri-Sat, June 4-5 at Racoon River Park while the Cycling race is tentatively scheduled for Elkhart Memorial Park on Saturday, June 5. The entire schedule will be posted by the end of February.
New Events:
There are a couple of new events for you to look forward to in 2010. Frisbee Throw for Distance will be held on Saturday, June 19 at Valley HS. Participants get three (3) throws with the longest one counting. We will use the same discs which are used for Frisbee Golf. The other two new events will be in Track & Field, Javelin Throw and 4 x 100 Relay. The Javelin is tentatively scheduled to be held at the end of the meet on Sunday, June 20. The Relay is not a national event but will give athletes an opportunity to put together relays of any age or sex and compete at the completion of the other events on Sunday.
Over 600 athletes competed in the 2009 Iowa Senior Olympic Games.
Seventy-four (74) new records were established. If you have a question or believe there is a mistake in the Results or Records, please contact me at

We would like to give recognition to the athletes who competed at the
National Senior Olympic Games in San Francisco this past August. If you competed, or know someone who was a representative from Iowa, please send that information to me at
lynns@wdmcs.org and I will post their results. Paul Grinvalds finished 4th in the Triple Jump at Nationals with a leap of 32-5 3/4. He won his heat in the 200 (27.52) before a hamstring injury knocked him out of the meet. Carroll Marty and Bob McFarland were 3rd in the 70 - 74 age group of Badminton Doubles at Nationals. Marshalltown's Otto Welfring and Darrell Mitchell excelled at Nationals. Otto won Gold in the Discus (75-79)while Darrell took Silver Medals in both the 80-84 / 200 & 400 (36.04 & 1:24.28). Another competitor who had an outstanding National Meet was Gary Paton of Rock Rapids who medaled in the 5,000 / 1,500 and 800 meter runs.
Dan Lake has served as the Executive Director of the Senior Olympics with distinction over the past years. He has moved on to become the head swim coach at Dowling Catholic High School. If anyone wishes to drop Dan a note at you may reach him at
dchsswimcoach@mac.com. Fortunately for us, Dan will stay involved with the Senior Olympics and be the Director for the swimming competition.
Steve Lynn is now the Executive Director of the Games. Steve helped run the successful 2009 National Junior Olympics which were held in Des Moines last July - August. Prior to that he helped run VEISHEA at Iowa State University. Many of you may have known Steve as the head track & field coach at ISU for 14 years and an assistant for 14 years prior to that.
